The interior sides of the tablet’s two leaves are recessed to hold a layer of wax. The text would have been inscribed on the wax with a stylus made of bronze or, occasionally, bone. Styluses as shown here have been found at Bogûazko¬y in central Anatolia, site of the Hittite capital, Hattusa. This type of stylus was most likely used for writing Hittite/Luwian hieroglyphics rather than cuneiform characters (compare with photo and drawing of boxwood writing tablet).
