Persephone’s mother, the harvest goddess Demeter, while searching for her lost child, stopped at Eleusis’s Kallichoron Well (shown here, compare with photos of the “fleeing maiden” statue and the caves in Eleusis). This well was later associated with a temple, the Telesterion, in which fertility rites known as the Eleusinian Mysteries were perfomed.
