The only Crusader structure to remain intact on the Temple Mount, the Dome of the Ascension lies just northwest of the Dome of the Rock. (This building was so named by later Muslim rulers, to commemorate the site from where Mohammed ascended to Heaven.) Originally an open-air pavilion (no one knows how it functioned or why the Crusaders built it), it was blocked up on all sides once Muslims regained control of Jerusalem.
