This gilded, 4-inch-tall silver piperatoria (pepper pot) was uncovered in Hoxne, Suffolk, nine years ago. Cast in the form of a bust of a late Roman empress, the pepper pot dispensed the expensive spice used to mask the unappetizing flavor of spoiled food.
