When Roberts reached Jerusalem on March 29, the city had been stricken by plague. “This morning,”however, “the quarantine has been removed and the whole population pour out of the gates to enjoy the open country…I made a circuit of the city walls.” His drawing below shows the southern wall of the Temple Mount, the large platform where King Herod built his temple on the presumed site of Solomon’s Temple. The large-domed building at center is the Dome of the Rock, mosque, built by the Islamic Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik in 691 A.D.
