Temple 1, containing the burial tomb of the king Ha Sawa Chaan-K’awil (682–734 A.D.), looms at the western end of the Great Plaza. The North Acropolis rises to the left (north) of the plaza. One of Tikal’s ball courts lay immediately south of Temple 1.
