The southern wall of the Old City east of Dung Gate, showing the major excavations which uncovered a palatial stairway and plaza leading up to the Temple Mount during the Herodian period. At the upper left is the silver dome of El Aksa mosque which sits on the Temple Mount. Over the Herodian ruins, Mazar found Byzantine and Omayyad structures.
