Moses Before the Burning Bush: Moses loosens his sandals in response to the command of God to “put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place whereon thou stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:5). Moses looks upward toward the commanding hand of God which issues from heaven (only a fingertip is visible in this picture). This mosaic is located on the left hand side of a double window in the uppermost zone of the eastern wall of the Church, above the apse and the triumphal arch; it is balanced on the right side by a portrayal of Moses receiving the Law. Directly behind this mosaic is the Chapel of the Burning Bush where for centuries a plant grew which pilgrims venerated as the original Burning Bush.
