The commemorative inscription found imbedded in the wall of the Siloam tunnel is a famous example of eighth century paleo-Hebrew script. The Siloam inscription is composed in elegant Biblical prose. “This is the story of the boring through … ” the inscription begins and continues relating the drama of the final moments when “pick-axe against pick-axe” the two teams of tunnelers dug through to each other across the last rock barrier.
