The inner gateway. The Lachish ostraca were found in a room in the outer gate of the double gate complex. In the upper right corner three people stand at the entrance leading through the gateway. The inner gateway was originally composed of four piers forming three rooms. Before the Assyrians destroyed Level IV–III in 701 B.C., an identical set of piers and rooms stood opposite. This is the largest city gate known from the Israelite period, measuring about 100 feet long by 75 feet wide.
