A crudely drawn cross marks a wall in the Garden Tomb’s southern chamber. During the Byzantine period, fifth or sixth centuries A.D., the Garden Tomb was cleared of its bones and funerary offerings and was then used anew as a burial place. This Byzantine period cross and other Christian symbols on the tomb walls provide archaeologists with evidence to date the period of the tomb’s reuse.
