Plan of the 11th century reconstruction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, by Constantine IX Monomachus. This restoration—completed in 1048— followed the destruction of the church in 1009 by the Fatimid Caliph, El Khakim. Black areas are extant. The rotunda was reconstructed and an additional niche added on the east. The Holy Garden was also retained. The Constantinian basilica, however, almost disappeared. In its place, east of the Holy Garden, were three chapels, known only from literary sources. A second group of three chapels was built south of the rotunda, and another chapel was added north of the rotunda. The entrance to the complex was from the south into the Holy Garden. The present entrance is in the same place.
