The Shapira Affair
Charles Clermont-Ganneau (1846–1923) pieced together the fragmented inscription on the Moabite Stone in the 1870s, when he was still a young man. He later became renowned as an Oriental scholar and was the first to identify the site of Biblical Gezer.
