Hershel Shanks

Built and rebuilt over a 500-year span (10th–6th century B.C.), the formidable Arad fortress has recently been restored to its ninth-century B.C. appearance, called fortress X by the excavators. The wall is built with a sawtooth line, creating shadows that accent height. This design of a sawtooth wall and towers flanking an eastern gate continued to be used into the seventh century B.C.
