Jerusalem today. This aerial view shows the area of Jerusalem corresponding to that in the photograph on the model (see photograph). Nearly three millennia of habitation have changed the contours of the land. The Kidron Valley (road at right) is 40 feet higher than in First Temple times (the model exaggerates the vertical scale somewhat for clarity). The valley to the west, called simply “The Valley” by the Bible and known in the Second Temple period as the Tyropoeon Valley is largely filled up. The road that follows this valley can be seen in this picture at extreme upper left; it begins just below the right-hand crane and slopes down, off the picture, into the Tyropoeon Valley.
