A relieving, or discharging, arch is an arch built into the wall above the lintel of a doorway. Without it, the pressure of the wall construction would break the lintel stone. The relieving arch diverts the pressure that comes from above through the arch stones to the side parts of the opening. Arrows show diversion of pressure from above.
