No entry. Intended to deflect invaders, large stones now block what had originally been the gates of the outer wall of Mitham Leviah (“The Enclosure of the Lioness”). Originally thought to have served merely as a large corral for shepherds and their flock, Mitham Leviah proved to have been a flourishing Early Bronze Age (3300–2250 B.C.E.) city—the earliest of the sites investigated by the Land of Geshur Project. Based on the shored-up gates and on the many shattered jars found throughout Mitham Leviah’s domestic buildings, the excavators surmise that the city was destroyed by enemy attack.
