Home is where the hearth is. When the Sea Peoples settled along the Canaanite coast, they brought with them architectural ideas from their Aegean homeland. This artist’s rendition of a megaron (a large building with central hall, side chambers and an open-fronted porch) at Pylos, in Greece, shows the importance accorded the hearth. Similar hearths have now been found at Ekron and Tell Qasile, two Philistine sites in Canaan. By contrast, they are unknown at Canaanite sites.
