Hershel Shanks

A suckling lion joins other beasts and birds that inhabit the southernmost aisle of the Gaza synagogue. Grapevines twist around the animals, creating medallions. Mosaics also decorated the northern aisle of this synagogue, and floors with similar compositions embellished many Mediterranean churches and synagogues of this period.
