Philadelphia was a small town in Turkey when John wrote the Book of Revelation in the first century A.D. However, the grandeur of its ruins, most notably of the Byzantine city walls, belies its size. Portions of the Byzantine basilica, which may be on the site of the original church where Paul preached, also remain.
