A pastiche of architectural styles encloses the sunlit courtyard of the Monastery of the Cross, hinting at the many times the ancient Eastern Orthodox compound has been rebuilt. Erected on the foundations of a sixth-century church, which apparently was destroyed in the Persian invasion of Jerusalem in 614, the monastery has been renovated several times since. Its varied buildings reflect the vicissitudes of history in the Holy Land.
