At Mound 4, Gabriel Barkay uncovered pottery and jar handles stamped with winged symbols and the word l’melekh (“belonging to the king”), seen here. The latter date to the reign of King Hezekiah (727–697 B.C.E.). Barkay’s excavation led him to suspect that the Jerusalem mounds did not serve as tombs but were built for a royal ceremony of some sort.
