Fakes? With charges of forgery swirling around antiquities collector Oded Golan, questions have been raised about other objects with which Golan has been associated. The 4-inch wide ostracon, or inscribed potsherd , records a three-shekel donation to “the House [Temple] of Yahweh.” A 7.5-inch-tall decanter is inscribed, “Belonging to Mattanyahu, wine for cultic libation, one quarter.” If authentic, the decanter may have belonged to a priest of the Jerusalem Temple. The seal reads, “Belonging to Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah.” The seal’s gold setting appears here also; both are published here for the first time. If genuine, the seal and setting would have belonged to the seventh-century B.C.E. king of Judah and be extremely valuable; though once offered for sale, these two objects have dropped from sight and may have been smuggled out of Israel.
