ON THE COVER: A first-century A.D. ossuary, or bone box, is once again the center of worldwide attention. Inscribed “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus,” the box was first made public in these pages late last year and hailed as the earliest historical reference to Jesus. This summer, however, a committee appointed by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) declared the inscription a modern forgery, and the IAA and Israeli police suspect the ossuary’s owner of fraud.
