Balage Balogh

An artist’s rendition of part of the large country estate occupied during the Herodian period (30 B.C.E. to 70 C.E.) at Ramat Hanadiv. Author Yizhar Hirschfeld excavated the site, known as Horvat ‘Eleq, located on the slope of a ridge in the Carmel mountains 3 miles east of Caesarea. He explains that it and a second, smaller, site called Horvat ‘Aqav constituted a single estate—complete with ritual baths, swimming pools and a large dovecote (the circular structure at left in the drawing)—that once belonged to a wealthy member of the Herodian elite.
