Sewn up tight: From the outside, the stitching on a sewn boat appears as single bands. Inside the hull, however, the stitching is more complex: a criss-cross pattern overlaying a bundle of fibers known as wadding that adds to the ship’s waterproofing. Both stitching and the wadding are soaked in oil to protect the fibers from rot.
