The four objects shown opposite highlight key periods in the city’s life. The partially preserved bronze cartouche (an oval frame bearing the name fo a monarch) was part of the socket of the city gate and contains the name of Ramesses III (1182–1151 B.C.E.); the cartouche indicates that Lachish in the mid-12th century B.C.E. was firmly under Egyptian control.
