The “House of David” inscription is one of the most important finds from Tel Dan or, for that matter, from any site in Israel: Its reference to the “House [Dynasty] of David” is the first mention found to ancient Israel’s warrior/king outside of the Bible. The inscription was discovered in three segments almost a decade after dig director Avraham Biran had promised to end the excavation at Dan—a promise, happily, he did not keep.
