ON THE COVER: A horned dog sinks its fangs into the back of a Giant’s head. the dog is in the service of Artemis, whose leg is visible at right. Artemis, a daughter of Zeus, was goddess of the hunt and is associated with animals. Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo, the god of music and prophecy. This scene appears on the east facade of the Great Altar of Pergamon (“Satan’s throne”).
