Beneath the watchtower of Megiddo Prison, surrounded by walls topped with concertina wire, prisoners of the jail uncovered ancient remains. The third-century A.D. settlement, designated as Area Q, was further uncovered in a salvage operation by the Israel Antiquities Authority. The excavation revealed living quarters for Roman army officers of the Sixth and Second Legions, courtyards, alleys, large ritual baths, baking facilities and, most important, a Christian prayer hall that may be the earliest church discovered in the Holy Land.
