Secreted away in the Palestine Archaeological Museum in the 1950s (now the Rockefeller Museum; denominated above as the Dead Sea Scroll prison), a small team of scholars pieced together thousands of tiny scroll fragments. Even in July/August 1989, when BAR published this photo of the museum on its cover, most of these fragmentary texts were still unpublished and kept hidden in the museum, where only a select few scholars could view them.
