TAKING LIBERTIES WITH THE NATIVITY? Compared to the gospel stories of Jesus’ adult public ministry, the two gospel accounts of his birth contain significant variations. Whereas Matthew 2:13–15 tells of Joseph, Mary and Jesus’ flight to Egypt to escape Herod’s murderous rampage (depicted above in Rembrandt’s 1627 oil painting Flight into Egypt), the story is completely absent from Luke’s gospel.
