Matthew seems to know nothing of Mary’s visit to her pregnant cousin Elizabeth, which Luke records in 1:39–56 and Raphael captured in his 16th-century painting Visitation. Although there may be some elements of historical reality in birth narratives, Freyne sees them as the gospel writers’ attempts to fill in the gaps in Jesus’ life “by providing a theological introduction in story form.”
