Pre-Christian use of the tau-rho compendium appears on coins struck during year 3 of the reign of Herod the Great. The combination stands for an abbreviation for the word trias meaning “third” and indicating the third year of the king’s reign. This compendium was later used in Christian texts in the word for “crucify” or “cross.”
