SILENT PROTEST. In the 1970s, the late Israeli archaeologist Nahman Avigad exposed part of Jerusalem’s Cardo (main north-south road) from the Byzantine period, but he refused to release photos of this discovery to BAR because he had not yet published them in a peer-reviewed journal. In protest of Avigad’s decision, Hershel published a large blank space in the December 1977 issue of BAR. Its caption explained that if the photos of the cardo had been released, they would have been published in BAR.
