As dawn breaks he is told, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed” (Genesis 32:38). In Marc Chagall’s “Jacob’s Struggle with the Angel,” three other episodes in the Jacob cycle are also portrayed—Jacob’s meeting with Rachel at the well, upper left; Joseph attacked and thrown into the pit by his brothers, center right; and Jacob weeping over the bloodstained coat of Joseph, lower right.
