Mt. Tabor, a traditional site of Jesus’ Transfiguration, seems itself transformed to a misty apparition rising from the valley of Jezreel (Esdraelon) in central Israel. As recounted in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus ascended a mountain with three disciples—Peter, James and John—who then witnessed his mystical transformation and heard the voice of God identify Jesus as His son.

Did the Transfiguration really occur? Father Jerome Murphy-O’Connor applies the techniques of literary criticism to the accounts of the Transfiguration and uncovers an historical basis for the story.
