Thomas Paine (1737–1809), a British radical political writer, gained lasting fame when he inflamed the American Revolution with his pamphlet Common Sense (1776). In The Age of Reason (1795), his attempt to debunk the historical truthfulness of the Bible garnered heavy fines and prison terms for his English publishers.
