For nearly two millennia, the hundreds of parchment documents we call the Dead Sea Scrolls lay hidden in a series of caves among the cliffs above the Wadi Qumran on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea. Dating from the third century B.C.E. to the first century C.E., the fragile, mostly fragmentary documents include portions of every book of the Hebrew Bible except the Book of Esther.
