ON THE COVER: A disconsolate Eve sits under the tree in the center of the garden of Eden, in this pastel and watercolor painting from 1889, titled simply “Eve,” by Paul Gauguin. For centuries, Bible readers have questioned why Eve did not die immediately when she ate the forbidden fruit. God clearly warned Adam, “As for the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Bad, you must not eat of it; for as soon as you eat of it, you shall die” (Genesis 2:17). In “Of Time and Immortality”, Jack M. Sasson finds a good reason why Eve survived the first bite: She ate from the wrong (or right!) tree.
