Politics—Not Religious Law—Rules Ultra-Orthodox Demonstrators

By Gabriel Barkay
056 Political power, not religious law, motivates the ultra-Orthodox in Israel who violently protest archaeological excavations, claiming that ancient Jewish graves are being desecrated. Jewish religious law (halakhah) does not prohibit...

Relics in Rubble: The Temple Mount Sifting Project

By Gabriel BarkayZachi Dvira
Jerusalem’s Temple Mount is one of the world’s holiest sites; archaeological excavations are prohibited here. But, in November 1999, the Islamic trust that controls the Islamic structures on the site bulldozed a massive area in the southeastern corner of the Temple Mount and dumped the excavated debris into the Kidron Valley. Two archaeologists are running a pioneering project to wet-sift this debris to search for Temple Mount artifacts that have been concealed for centuries.

Yes There Was

By Ephraim Stern
039 Let me begin with several basic facts—more historical than archaeological—on which Joseph Blenkinsopp and I can agree. When the Babylonians arrived in the Land of Israel, there were no fewer than eight independent kingdoms there and in...

Edomites Advance into Judah

Israelite defensive fortresses inadequate
By Itzhaq Beit-Arieh
028 Like many peoples mentioned in the Bible but otherwise almost unknown, the Edomites are coming to life through the wonders of archaeology. Ironically, however, some of the most dramatic finds are being excavated in Israel rather than in the...

Pagan Yahwism: The Folk Religion of Ancient Israel

By Ephraim Stern
021 The Bible imagines the religion of ancient Israel as purely monotheistic. And doubtless there were Israelites, particularly those associated with the Jerusalem Temple, who were strict monotheists. But the archaeological evidence (and the...

The Babylonian Gap

The Assyrians impressed their culture on Israel … the Babylonians left no trace
By Ephraim Stern
045 The Assyrians and Babylonians both ravaged large parts of ancient Israel, yet the archaeological evidence from the aftermath of their respective conquests tells two very different stories. Why? In 721 B.C.E., the Assyrians brought an end to...

Royal Palace, Royal Portrait?

The Tantalizing Possibilities of Ramat Raḥel
By Gabriel Barkay
034 The first Judahite royal palace ever exposed in an archaeological excavation is bei ng rediscovered. And with this renewed interest come echoes of what is probably one of the bitterest rivalries in the history of Israeli ar chaeology—between...

The Other “Philistines”

By Ephraim Stern
030 The Bible portrays the Philistines as Israel’s cruel and ruthless enemy. The two peoples engaged in a fierce struggle for control of the land in the 12th–11th centuries B.C.E. We all know the stories of Samson’s struggles against the...

New Light on the Edomites

By Itzhaq Beit-Arieh
028 029 Winter is sometimes the best time to dig in Israel’s Negev desert—and sometimes the worst. In summer the heat can be stifling; while in winter, cold windy days at times prevent any...

What Happened to the Cult Figurines? Israelite Religion Purified After the Exile

By Ephraim Stern
022 Accidental discoveries of two pits containing cult figurines have led me to discern an extraordinary development in Israelite religious observance. This development occurred when the Jews returned from the Babylonian Exile in the sixth to...

The Garden Tomb: Was Jesus Buried Here?

By Gabriel Barkay
040 First-time visitors to Jerusalem are often surprised to learn that two very different sites vie for recognition as the burial place of Jesus. One is, as its name implies, the Holy Sepulchre Church; it is located in a crowded area of the...

Is This the Prophet Isaiah’s Signature?

By Eilat Mazar
The Ophel excavations at the foot of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount have yielded numerous exciting discoveries, including a new Biblical signature. Archaeologist Eilat Mazar reveals what may be a seal impression of the prophet Isaiah—unveiled here for the first time ever—in honor of Hershel Shanks’s retirement as Editor of BAR.

Excavations at Tell Mevorakh Are Prelude to Tell Dor Dig

What a daughter site can tell us about its mother
By Ephraim Stern
034 In 1980, the first spade will sink into Tell Dor. As previously announced in BAR (“Yigael Yadin to Head New Excavation,” BAR 04:04), I will direct the field work at the new excavation. In a sense, however, this excavation began several years...

Gorgon Excavated at Dor

By Ephraim Stern
051 It was a fitting climax. We had been excavating at Tel Dor—an 80-acre tell, or mound, on the Mediterranean coast of Israel—for 20 exciting years. This was to be our last season. It was near the end of the dig when we found evidence of a Greek...

The Many Masters of Dor, Part 1: When Canaanites Became Phoenician Sailors

By Ephraim Stern
022 History runs deep at Tel Dor—45 feet deep to be exact! Layer upon layer of ancient cities, each built on the ruins of its predecessor, have formed this immense mound on Israel’s Mediterranean coast, about 12 miles south of Haifa. As...

Hadrian’s Legion

Encamped on the Temple Mount
By Eilat Mazar
053 After the Romans destroyed the Temple and burned Jerusalem in 70 C.E., the Xth Legion (Fretensis) of the Roman army camped on the southwestern hill of the city, in the area known today as the Citadel, by Jaffa Gate.1 This was not,...

Royal Gateway to Ancient Jerusalem Uncovered

By Eilat Mazar
038 Dedicated to the memory of Professor Yigal Shiloh. The love and devotion he brought to the discovery of ancient Jerusalem will continue to inspire us for many years to come. For ten years—from 1968 to 1977—the area adjacent to the southern...

Did I Find King David’s Palace?

By Eilat Mazar
016 016 There can be little doubt that King David had a palace. The Bible tells us that Hiram of Tyre (who would later help King Solomon build the Temple) constructed the palace for David: “...

Achziv Cemeteries: Buried Treasure from Israel’s Phoenician Neighbor

By Eilat Mazar
034 Like so many archaeological projects, the excavation of the Phoenician tombs at Achziv was prompted by looters. In 1941, when Great Britain governed the land of Israel, the Mandatory Department of Antiquities assigned Dr. Immanuel Ben-Dor to...

What’s an Egyptian Temple Doing in Jerusalem?

By Gabriel Barkay
048 049 Recent attacks on the historicity of the United Monarchy of David and Solomon (in the tenth century B.C.) have focused on the scant archaeological remains that have been discovered in...
