ON THE COVER: Clutching the tablets of the Law and staring resolutely, Michelangelo’s muscular Moses conveys superhuman power and determination. At least 7 feet 8 1/2; inches, the marble statue appears as imposing in size as it is in chararcter. But it is the pair of irregular horns upon the head that especially gives the figure an unearthly quality. Why did Michelangelo, and many other artists down through the centuries, put horns on Moses?
